Mission
Mission of the application research topic is to develop a common understanding of the various technologies intended to facilitate the use of other services of SESA. This working group will develop (1) use case scenarios that help validate the real-world fitness of SESA components and (2) domain-specific implementations which will be used for testing of SESA services.

Future Steps
The goal of the subsequent SWS challenge workshops is to further build on results from previous workshop, attract additional organizations with aim to demonstrate more sophisticated semantic integration addressing the SWS challenge scenarios. The SWS Challenge workshops are important events complementing various activities and work in Semantic Web Services community, in particular, work of participants focused around conceptual and formal framework for SWS, discovery and composition of services, interoperation and invocation of services, architecture for the SWS is relevant and directly addresses problems defined by SWS challenge.
We aim to disseminate the workshop results and continue with the same approach as for the previous workshops. We have a book planned with the results from the first six participant teams, and we are applying to become a W3C incubator. We anticipate that this will be a high visibility event for the Semantic Web Services community and the SWS Challenge may become the de facto certification authority for all such technologies.
Semantic Web Serivce Challenge
The overall goal of the Semantic Web Services challenge is to encourage development by requiring constructive demonstration, comparison, and evaluation of various technologies on standard problems. The ultimate purpose is to facilitate the automation of service-based system integration: i.e. mediation, choreography and discovery of services using semantic annotations. The organizers of the Semantic Web Services (SWS) Challenge Workshop would like to continue and scale this initiative. But this will require serious resources beyond what we have so far committed on an ad hoc basis.
The SWS Challenge initiative is not just a set of workshops. Participants must be qualified for each workshop by building a working system that sends correct sets of messages to an infrastructure maintained by the SWS Challenge organizers. We not only create a set of problems that are defined informally (by design) but also sets of web services that correspond to these problems, as well as a method of automatically logging messages to them. For a given problem level, we can determine semi-automatically whether a participant team has actually solven a given problem "level". We maintain a wiki to describe the current state of the initiative in detail as well as a repository which contains problems, participant solution code and ontologies which everyone is encouraged to reuse.
At the workshops, the participant presents their results in paper and in code which are peer-reviewed by the participants. A consensus is reached and the results are posted on the SWS Challenge website. We certify the functionality of each tested technology and the flexibility degree for each technology to go from one problem level to another.
SWS challenge workshops have been defined and aligned including increasingly difficult case scenarios and evaluation criteria.
